The Story of the slate stones washed ashore at Isle of Easdale, Scotland.
The Isle of Easdale has predominantly been filled with slate mining villages in the 19th century. Gunpowder was used to blast the slate pits and by 1880 the main pit was over 75m deep and nearly 250 feet under the sea level with only very thin walls to keep the sea out. In late 1881 a violent storm raged on which resulted in the mines getting flooded; luckily the pits of Isle of Easdale were unmanned at the time, but over 240 families have lost their only means of support and severe poverty ensued in the area. After the tragedy, little bits of slate have been washing ashore locally ever since. This necklace is made from one of those stones.
The stone is 2.3 cm ( 1 inch ) long and 1.3 cm ( 0.6 inch ) wide.
The stone is connected to the chain with a sterling silver clasp.
Silver plated chain length: 45 cm ( 17.8 inch ) with additional 5 cm ( 2 inch ) extension.
